Financial Consultant (Downey, Los Angeles, Santa Monica)

The Financial Consultant provides financial planning and investment advice to members of the credit union.  The main goal of the Financial Consultant is to help credit union members maintain a good balance of investment earnings, assets and an acceptable risk level.  Financial advisory services are often sought when the member wants advice regarding financial investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other investment strategies.  The services provided by a financial consultant usually make strategizing for events, such as asset acquisition or retirement, easier for the members.  This job role covers the Downey, Los Angeles and Santa Monica markets.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Meets with members and examines members' current financial situation through series of questions and analysis of current investment strategies.  Build and nuture long-term member relations.
  • Keeps apprised of and, when applicable, conforms to current financial market trends, strategies and product offerings and regulations and provides objective advice based on this information.
  • On a regular basis, organize and deliver financial and economic training to the credit union retail branch staff, mortgage bankers, commercial lenders and financial institution leadership.
  • Provides advice on how members can best manage daily expenses and fund specific projects while maximizing profits.
  • Continuously markets and promotes employers financial products through meetings, seminars, referrals, etc., and increases revenues while maintaining integrity and explaining risks of investment decisions.
  • Operates from assigned branches of the financial institution providing onsite coverage and availability to meet with walk-in members and referrals from the financial institution.
  • Trustworthy, professional and objective in providing advice.
  • Consistently meets deadlines, has a strong sense of urgency and is able to manage stressful situations.
  • Complies with SCU security standards, and all State and Federal laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Office of Foregin Asset Control (OFAC), and the Patriot Act in the performance of the duties assigned as applicable.
  • Ability to conduct Financial Planning Workshops.

Knowledge and Skills

EXPERIENCE:  Three years to five years of similar or related experience, at least three years of progressively responsible experience in the financial services industry working as a Financial Consultant.  A proven record of acting in the best interests of the member/investor.



  • Bachelor's Degree, with major course work in Business, Finance/Accounting or a closely related field or an equivalant combination of training and experience. 
  • Must be registered as a Financial Advisor and hold a Series 7, 66 and Life Insurance licenses. 
  • Must possess the necessary financial knowledge in insurance, retirement accounts, tax services and financing accounts.



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Visionary, self-starter with the aptitude to build long-standing relationships with members and staff. 
  • The ability to work with and train Branch Staff for referrals is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust.



  • Strong sales and negotiation skills. 
  • Must have the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully fulfill the responsibilities and expectations illustrated in this job description.
